Domestic Solar PV
A solar photovoltaic (PV) system works using an array of panels, typically mounted on the roof. Each solar panel is made up of photovoltaic cells that are wafer-thin layers of silicon with a dark blue/black colour to them.
How does Solar PV Work?
When the sun comes out and any level of daylight reaches the PV cells
it creates an electric field. A higher concentration (brighter)
sunlight produces more electricity. The panel then takes the DC
(direct-current) rated electricity to an inverter, which converts it
into AC (alternating-current) electricity ready for use.
With a domestic solar PV system installed, the power generated with your panels will be utilised to power your own appliances, making a lot of the power you use during the day free of charge. If you use more energy during the day than you produce at night time, power will be automatically drawn from the national grid.
Utilising Solar PV
Solar PV systems cannot store electricity, so to ensure you are getting the most value out of your solar panel it is advised that you use any electricity intensive appliances such as washers and driers during the day, to preventing you from selling your electricity during the day only to buy it back again later in the night.

Solar PV is a great investment for the future; it helps save you from high cost energy bills and protects you against rising fuel prices. It also generates a tax-free income through the government’s feed-in tariff.

Case 5 – residential
A St Austell couple are looking on the bright side after reducing their energy bills by installing solar panels on the roof of their home. They are now set to save £194 a year on energy bills and receive cash back from their energy supplier of around £442 a year through the government’s feed-in tariff scheme.
